'The Vaulting Horse painting was suggested from watching a number of Gendarmes at vaulting practice in the open air, one evening, on the quay, beside the Seine, close by Notre Dame; like true French gourmets, they stopped their leaping abruptly, when a police van arrived with their evening meal' – Roberts, Paintings and Drawings (1976).
PROVENANCE: Estate of John David Roberts (held in Tate store, 2014)
EXHIBITION HISTORY: Royal Academy 1975
REPRODUCED: Roberts, Paintings and Drawings (1976), pl. 44, where dated 1975. (Cf. The Vigilantes 1974, ibid., pl. 43, where there is also a discrepancy between the date in the caption and the date on the painting.)
