One of three pictures on transport-related subjects commissioned for £25 each by the War Artists' Advisory Committee in August 1941. A Station Scene in Wartime was also completed , but a proposed dock subject was abandoned after an abortive trip to Hull was curtailed because of teaching commitments (correspondence in Roberts’s file in section GP/55/2 of the War Artists’ Archive, Imperial War Museum, London).
